August 6 through 12

Hi church,

I hope you're enjoying the dog days of summer. I consulted my dog, who said it's way too hot, and it's not her fault or that of her species. Well, sorry I brought it up, then.

Anyway...we've got a few things goin' on this week, despite the heat.

On Thursday, August 9th, at 7pm, the Design Team will be meeting at Mike Croghan and Tina Driskell's house to plan the fall series of worship services. (Who is the Design Team? If you'd like to help plan our fall services, then you are. You can participate at any level that works for you, so come on by. We'll order some pizza for those who prefer not to eat before they arrive, but we'll try to start working early so we can go home early too.) This fall, we're going to be exploring how Christian communities take on very different forms depending on the cultural context in which they arise. If you have suggestions for communities worldwide on which we might focus, please send them to the Design Team email list.

Then, speaking of Mike and Tina's house, everybody's invited to a housewarming party at our new place starting at 6pm on Saturday the 11th. Please don't bring gifts - we don't need more stuff, and we feel pretty strongly that it's friends and neighbors that warm a house. You can bring a side, salad, or dessert, if you want to, but that's entirely optional. We'll be providing grilled meats and veggie-meats, and a variety of beverages and finger foods. Also, Paolo's rockin' karaoke mic will be there to make stars of us all. Hope to see you there!

Alas, our HOA's draconian parking policies will compel us to send you home by 10pm Saturday night, in plenty of time to get a good night's rest before our worship service at 10am Sunday morning at Jammin' Java. Continuing our summer film series, P3T3 will lead us in reflecting on a film segment about a "cargo cult" on a Pacific island in the mid-20th century - and what their religious expressions might have in common with ours.

Have fun beating the heat!

Peace,

Croghan

July 9 through 15

Summer is rolling right along, and so our Common Table becomes a bit more portable in the next few weeks:

This Sunday, Dee will be our provocateur as we continue in our series featuring short films and lively discussions. Join us at Jammin' Java at 10am, or at Chipotle--where The Lord's Supper is shared properly--afterward.

Next weekend, you've got an opportunity to get away, or to sweat, or both. Led by the Chief Camper himself, a bunch of folks will be heading a few hours west for a little getaway. Feel free to join them anytime between Friday, July 20 and Tuesday, July 24. Sam can get you the details (I've found it best to talk to him in person ;-), or you can contact us if you'd like to join in.

Or, if you prefer your outdoors in smaller doses, you're welcome to join the Chapmans and the Stavlunds at Burke Lake on Saturday, July 21 for a good cause. We'll be walking and running (and sweating!) in the 1-mile and 5-mile events that are being organized to raise money for children's cardiac research, and to support the families of these kids. Come walk, run, or just watch as we try to avoid any cardiac events, ourselves.

Keep cool,

Mike (Stavlund)

July 2 through July 8

Hi church,

Well, it's a holiday week, as you've no doubt noticed (happy birthday, USA, and I hope we 're all managing to enjoy some sun, food, family, friends, and fireworks). So there's not too much going on. But we do have a very special worship service planned for this Sunday morning (the 8th) at 10 AM at Jammin' Java.

It's "Bring Your Bunny to Church" week! Please bring a stuffed animal of some kind - a bunny would be perfect, but any stuffed animal would do, and ideally it would be one well-loved over years by you or some other adult. (It's fine to bring one well-loved by your child, but in that case it may, of course, have no choice but to spend the service in the child-care area.) Don't worry, we're not going to hurt them, though your relationship with the toy may not be quite the same following the service. :-D Yes, this has something to do with the film we're going to watch. (It's the second in our summer film series of services.)

Also, following the service, we're going to have a two-part congregational meeting. Immediately after the service, at Jammin' Java, the Leadership Team will talk a little bit about where we are with finances, and a plan we've been talking about for moving forward. Then we'll move to someone's home (location TBD) to further discuss the path forward.

Have a great week, everybody!

Peace,
Croghan

June 25 through July 1

Hi church,

The two Spiritual Formation groups will both be meeting this week - "64" on Tuesday evening at Mike Stavlund's place, and the contemplative practices group on Wednesday evening at Mike Croghan's place. Contact the appropriate Mike for the skinny on either group.

This Sunday, July 1st, we'll gather at Jammin' Java for the first in our summer series of worship services, in which we'll use short films as a catalyst to challenge and inspire each other about living into and out of the Kingdom, and invite God's inspiration too. We'll begin the series by watching and discussing a film called "Tackle Box," which presents an interesting take on the effect an authentic, passionate life can have on others.

After the worship service, we'll have a short congregational meeting at Jammin' Java, to discuss the path forward in regard to our financial situation. If we get to talkin' until we're wearing out our welcome at Java, we'll retire to someone's home (TBD) to carry on the discussion.

And that's it for this week, I think. Enjoy it!

Peace,
Croghan
